Applied Geology has extensive experience of undertaking geotechnical appraisals for a wide range of development types on both greenfield and brownfield sites.
Our specialists have experience in the following:
- Foundation type assessment
- Assessment of specialist ground treatment schemes and geotechnical processes with respect to weak natural and Made Ground
- Foundation bearing capacity and settlement appraisals
- Foundation depth assessment in relation to shrinkability/trees
- Piled foundation assessment
- Earthworks design, specification and validation
- Materials engineering and stabilisation
- Pavement engineering and construction
- Slope stability assessment and design (Cuttings & Embankments, soil & rock)
- Assessment of solution features in soluble rocks

On brownfield sites it is often essential that the geotechnical solution for a site fully takes into account the identified pollutant linkages and selected reclamation strategy. The geotechnical solution for a site should not be considered in isolation. An example of this is the re-engineering of weak near surface natural strata and Made Ground to support raft or ring-beam spread footings as an alternative to a piled foundation solution or vibro-replacement where the penetration of an aquiclude could result in the creation of an unacceptable vertical migration pathway to an underlying aquifer for contaminants.
Applied Geology’s extensive experience in both geotechnical and contaminated land disciplines enables it to provide an integrated approach to the solution of ground related problems.
- Settlement modelling for warehouse floor slabs and raft foundations.
- Total and differential settlement together with estimations of time for consolidation.
- Design of preload and surcharge ground improvement.
